About Recall
About Me!
hi! Im recall. I have worked on the fringes of web development for over a decade but never got around to making my *own* website.. soooo here it is! depending on when you read this there may still be many wip elements of the site... most of my skills I take from my professional backgroud are related to css, and a bit of html, but basically no javascript so I have had to learn it as I go (looking up and asking a LOT.)
I found nekoweb through the artist NAPCAST recently and felt utterly moved by the premise and community. I had wanted to work on my own website, or ANY website that wasnt for work really, for yeeaaars but nothing really moved me like seeing what kicya was doing with nekoweb, so here I am! I know the internet is for cats but.. I hope I can hang out too ^^
my current interests are pretty laser focused on web development, I find its a good way to develop technical skills while fulfilling an artistic muscle thats gone uflexed for years. if you happen to be reading this and dont have a website I dont think theres ever been a better time to try. user-centric platforms like nekoweb and neocities are trying to usher in a new-old era of a decentralized web and they cant do it without YOUR help. with years of stack overflows and incredible teaching tools like current """ai""" its never been easier to dive in head first.
in addition to webdev I am writing a game! but I need to make it :P its there when I close my eyes. it knaws at me...........
I designed this site to look and feel like windowsXP because thats the first generation of computing I was really very active with. I find the use of gradients, big blocks of color, and drop shadow to be welcoming which is how I would like you (prospective reader!) to feel when you stumble upon my corner of the web.
A note about 'AI' and its deployment in the creation of this website
on the topic of 'ai' or LLMs--whathaveyou--I think they have a real potential to steal the soul from human beings (and computer savvy dogs and cats!) and its up to us to use it in a way that enriches us but doesnt steal from the soul of our work (if one is to use it at all.) I could have asked claude, gpt, whichever current ai to make this site without writing a single line of my own html, css, or js and it would probably look more authentic while functioning AND looking better--but that would sort of ruin the point, and the fun! creation is humanity's greatest gift and it has never been easier to foresake this gift thanks to ai. to this point none of the text you read, none of the images you see, none of the styling on this site, and none of the icons you click on are generated by ai .
('but' incoming)in truth though I did and continue to use claude as a teacher for javascript, and to bounce ideas off of, with specific instruction to teach rather than serve up ready-to-use code snipets. still, for this I cannot claim this site to be entirely ai free in its creation. I can confidently say that it shared no part in the design, though.
I have personally struggled with coding--and js in particular--for over a decade of attempts and ai has enabled me to engage with it seriously, if thats the cost to have this website project actually hapen, then its a cost im willing to pay. I need the hands-on tutoring it can provide and I cannot afford to pay a human to do that. I would if I could.
if that troubles you I entirely understand. ai has stolen from everyone thats ever made anything thats come into contact with the internet. its driving energy costs higher and harming the environment... but these factors of ai are not driven by consumer use or demand. no amount of individual protest against ai will prevent its proliferation because those that drive it are monied and hungery to remove humanity from as much of the capital lifecycle/economy as possible. my perspective is that we should at least squeeze blood from this stone as much as we can, since its our own blood we're getting back. I hope that makes sense.
